Colic

Title:
“The Short-term Effect of Spinal Manipulation in the Treatment of Infantile Colic: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial with a Blinded Observer”.

This is a randomised controlled trial that took place in a private chiropractic practice and the National Health Service’s centre in a suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark.

All infants in the study were diagnosed with colic.

The infants were divided into two groups. One group of infants received spinal care for two weeks, the other was treated with the drug dimethicone for two weeks.

The changes in daily hours of crying were recorded in a colic diary.

Results:

By days four to seven, the hours of crying were reduced by only 1 hour in the dimethicone group compared with 2.4 hours in the chiropractic group.

On days eight to eleven, crying was reduced by only 1 hour for the dimethicone group, whereas crying in the manipulation group was reduced by 2.7 hours.

From day five onward the manipulation group did significantly better than the dimethicone group.

Conclusion: Spinal manipulation is effective in relieving infantile colic.

Disc Injuries

Many people suffer from back pain on a daily basis. This is by far not normal however it is common. Our daily lifestyle may be a contributing factor to the large numbers of people suffering back pains. We spend much of our time sitting at computers, working longer and longer hours, we exercise less and less and stress has become a constant reminder of everyday life. All these factors contribute to the common back problems that people suffer on a daily basis.

Specific chiropractic care has shown a new life to many people who have suffered for many years with these ongoing back pains. Helping relieve the pain and restoring normal function to the spinal bones and joints.

The two most common causes to lower back pains are what is commonly called a Disc Bulge and Inflammation to the Facet joints of the lumbar spine. Both types of conditions are easily helped with specific chiropractic adjustments to improve the function of the lumbar spine and ultrasound to reduces the active inflammation. Both these treatments are used extensively in our clinic to help you achieve faster results.

Ear Infections

Ear Infection

Title:
“Ear Infection: A Retrospective Study Examining Improvement from Chiropractic Care and Analyzing for Influencing Factors”.

Froehle RM (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1996: 19:169-77).

Objective: The aims of this study were to determine (a) if the patients improved while under chiropractic care: (b) how many treatments were needed to reach improvement; and (c) which factors were associated with early improvement.
Design: Cohort, nonrandomized retrospective study.

Setting: Private chiropractic practice in a Minneapolis suburb.

Participants: Forty-six children aged 5 yr and under.

Intervention: All treatments were done by a single chiropractor, who adjusted the subluxations found and paid particular attention to the cervical vertebrae and occiput. Sacral Occipital Technique-style pelvic blocking and the doctor's own modified applied kinesiology were also used. Typical treatment regimen was three treatments per week for 1 wk, then two treatments per week for 1 wk, then one treatment per week. However, treatment regimen was terminated when there was improvement.

Outcome Measure: Improvement was based on parental decision (they stated that the child had no fever, no signs of ear pain, and was totally asymptomatic), and/or the child seemed to be asymptomatic to the treating DC and/or the parent stated that the child's MD judged the child to be improved. A data abstraction form was used to determine number of treatments used and presence of factors possibly associated with early improvement.

Results: 93% of all episodes improved, 75% in 10 days or fewer and 43% with only one or two treatments. Young age, no history of antibiotic use, initial episode (vs. recurrent) and designation of an episode as discomfort rather than ear infection were factors associated with improvement with the fewest treatments.

Conclusion: Although there were several limitations to this study (mostly because of its retrospection but also, significantly, because very little data was found regarding the natural course of ear infections), this study's data indicate that limitation of medical intervention and the addition of chiropractic care may decrease the symptoms of ear infection in young children.

Headaches & Migraines

Some Facts About Headache

  • 85% of the population have experienced headache within the last year and up to 35% of adults will have had a headache in the last two weeks
  • Many headaches previously considered to be tension headaches are related to mechanical disorders of the cervical spine or other structures
  • Drug indeced headaches are common more common in people that regularly use analgesics for pain relief.
  • 5% of children suffer from migraine by the age of 11 years.
  • Eye strain in not a common cause of headache.
  • Types of Headaches

There are several different types of headache, the most common being cervico-genic tension type headaches. They are typically headaches with constant pain lasting days which have many components such as tension, depression and cervical dysfunction. Other types include: Migraine, Cervical Dysfunction, Frontal Sinusitis, cluster headache, Drug Rebound Headache, Hypertension Headaches and many more.

    Tension Headaches

Tension type headaches are caused by a symmetrical tightness in the muscles of the cervical spine and scalp, they can last for hours and are often created by increases in stress and anxiety. The pain of these headaches is frontal over the forehead and temples. It is of a dull nature and often feels like a hatband tightening, it usually begins during the day and becomes worst with time. A tension headache is often released by various relaxation techniques however, treatment is often necessary for lasting relief, see your chiropractor for effective relief.

    Migraine Headaches

Migraine literally means pain involving half the head. Affecting 1 in 10 people, and more common in females There are many different types of migraine or vascular headache, some of these include the common migraine with its associated visual aura, Cluster Headache and Menstrual Migraine.

Clinical features of the typical migraine include an intense throbbing pain which may last from 4 hours to up to 72 hours. Migraine Headaches can be triggered by a variety of foods, stress and some types of activity. Depending on the level of debility migraine headache sufferers may have a joint management team with a GP, Chiropractor and masseur. They often require prophylactic treatment to reduce the severity and frequency of their migraines.

    Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches usually occur during the night in the early hours of the morning from 1-3 times a day at regular times almost like clockwork, they begin rapidly and last from 15 minutes to 2-3 hours. They more commonly occur in males and is rare in childhood. During the periods of active cycles alcohol can be a aggravating factor.

    Cervicogenic Headache

This type of headache is probably one of the most common headaches and is referred to as occipital neuralgia. The headache can be caused by abnormalities in any structure innervated by the upper two cervical nerves. This type of headache is often incorrectly diagnosed as migraine. Cervico-genic headaches are often found at the back of the head, it radiates to the eye and is of a nagging dull ache. It can often occur daily and can last anywhere from one to six hours is can appear at any time throughout the day but usually upon waking in the morning. Tenderness can be felt in the joints of the cervical spine and often in the shoulder muscles.

Cervicogenic headache can be aggravated and triggered by such events as a motor vehicle accident, large falls and bumps sustained poor postures and various other mechanical events common in today’s lifestyle.

    Drug Rebound Headache

Drugs can also be a major factor causing headaches. Some of the most common drugs causing headaches include the following: Alcohol, Analgesics eg aspirin, codeine (rebound headaches). Antihypertensives, Caffeine, corticosteroids, NSAIDS, oral contraceptives, and many more. Many of these drugs are used in the medical treatment for pains including headache and migraine, however with prolonged use the common side effect is headaches and migraines. Use these drugs sparingly and if you do experience recurrent pain in the head then consult your chiropractor and look to the natural alternative it may be just what your looking for. Motor Accidents & Whiplash

Whiplash

Motor Vehicle accidents can be a real pain, not only do you have to have your car repaired but until its fixed your put out and have to borrow a car, catch the bus, hire another car. On its return from the reparier the car is back as good as new. All the parts are replaced and now work as the did before. So what about your body? You were in the accident as well, Unfortunately most people ignore themselves and go about their everyday work. After all nothing is broken. And your not in uncontrollable pain, nevermind the headaches you can take panadol for them. We don't think about why the headaches have now started. Whiplash can occur in almost all accidents to a degree, if you have been in a car accident even a small one, you should get your spine checked. Call for an appointment.

Whiplash injury occurs from the whipping action of the head following a motor vehicle accident of other significant trauma in a sporting knowk or bump. Patients with whiplash injury often present with varying degrees of pain and loss of mobility with spinal dysfunction a major component. The whipping action during the accident causes injury to the soft tissues of the cervical spine including muscle, nerve roots, the cervical sympathetic chain, ligaments and apophyseal joints their capsules and intervertebral discs.

Whiplash presentation

The cervical spine (neck) presents with varying degrees of stiffness and restriction from the neck down into the shoulders and down the spine between the shoulders. Headache is a common symptom and is related to the resultant cervical dysfunction. Pain can passes into the distribution of the various cervical nerve roots down into the hands and fingers, this is caused by the inflammation of the nerves and cervical discs. The symptoms can appear immediately or more commonly they appear after some time. The more chronic symptoms occur from the resultant decay or osteoarthritis that occurs after the accident in the cervical spine.

Scoliossis

Your spine is made up of 24 bones called vertebrae. They stack up one on top of the other to form a straight line when viewed from front to back. It very common for there to be a slight deviation, however, when there are excessive curves or twists, it can be referred to as a scoliosis (Greek for “crooked”).

Scoliosis can be classified into two categories depending on the cause. A non-structural scoliosis is related to a compensation that the body makes due to poor posture or as a protective mechanism because of a painful condition. Conversely, a structural scoliosis is in fact due to a deformity within the spine or nervous system.

Quite often, scoliosis isn’t present from birth and develops as a child grows. Many people don’t even realise they have a scoliosis, leading normal lives, never knowing they have the condition. If allowed to progress, however, it can lead to breathing difficulties, comprised heart function, and other neurological deficits.

Treatment for scoliosis is many and varied. Most often, exercise are prescribed to maintain muscle tone. Chiropractic care may maintain flexibility and mobility of the spine, thus allowing it to remain balanced.

If you believe you or your child have a scoliosis, please feel free to call us at the clinic for an assessment.
